Drug Information
1 review for Amlodipine + Atorvastatin (Caduet)
Caduet combines two medicines in one tablet: amlodipine, which lowers blood pressure, and atorvastatin, which lowers cholesterol. It is for people who need both treatments.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure or angina in people who also need a cholesterol medicine
- Lowering the risk of heart attack and stroke
How does it work?
Amlodipine relaxes blood vessel walls to lower blood pressure. Atorvastatin reduces how much cholesterol the liver makes, which lowers "bad" LDL cholesterol in the blood.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can raise the level of this medicine in your blood. Avoid them unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, a narrow heart valve (aortic stenosis) or very low blood pressure.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, drink a lot of alcohol, or have had muscle problems with a statin.
- Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Some medicines raise the risk of muscle problems with atorvastatin, such as clarithromycin, some HIV medicines, ciclosporin and gemfibrozil.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Caduet can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Swollen ankles or feet
- Flushing (warm, red face)
- Headache, especially at first
- Feeling dizzy or tired
- Muscle aches or joint pain
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- Chest pain that is new or worse than usual
- A very fast, slow or uneven heartbeat
- Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take one tablet once a day, at the same time each day.
- Swallow it with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
- Keep eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat.
- Your doctor will check your cholesterol and liver with blood tests.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Caduet for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Caduet?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWhy are my ankles swollen on Caduet?
- A
Ankle swelling is a common side effect. Raising your feet when sitting can help. Tell your doctor if it is bad, as the dose or medicine can be changed.
