Mebeverine is a medicine that relieves stomach cramps, spasms, bloating and pain in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

It works directly on the gut muscles, so it has very few side effects elsewhere in the body.

What is it used for?

How does it work?

Mebeverine relaxes the muscles of the bowel directly, easing painful spasms without affecting normal gut movement.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have a blocked bowel, severe constipation, or porphyria.
See a doctor if you are over 40 with new bowel symptoms, have blood in your stools, unexplained weight loss, fever, or symptoms that wake you at night. These are not typical of IBS.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Colospa can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Indigestion or heartburn
Dizziness
Constipation or diarrhoea

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, swelling or trouble breathing

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it 20 minutes before meals, three times a day (135 mg tablets), or twice a day for slow-release capsules (200 mg).
Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water.
When your symptoms improve, your doctor may lower the dose.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How quickly does Colospa work?: Many people notice relief from cramps within an hour or so of a dose.
What else helps IBS?: Regular meals, drinking enough water, managing stress, and adjusting fibre can help. Some people find a low-FODMAP diet useful with guidance from a dietitian.
Can I take Colospa only when I have symptoms?: Some people take it regularly and others only when cramps flare up. Ask your doctor which is best for you.
