13 reviews for Verapamil (Isoptin)
Isoptin contains Verapamil.
Verapamil is a medicine for high blood pressure, chest pain (angina) and some types of fast or uneven heartbeat. It belongs to a group called calcium channel blockers.
Unlike some others in its group, verapamil also slows the heart rate. It is sometimes used to prevent cluster headaches.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Angina (chest pain)
- Some fast heart rhythms, such as supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation
How does it work?
Verapamil stops calcium entering heart and blood vessel muscle cells. This relaxes the blood vessels and slows the electrical signals in the heart, which lowers blood pressure and steadies the heartbeat.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can raise the level of this medicine in your blood. Avoid them unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, a narrow heart valve (aortic stenosis) or very low blood pressure.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Tell your doctor if you have a slow heartbeat, heart block or heart failure.
- It reacts with many medicines, including beta blockers, digoxin, some statins (like simvastatin), colchicine and some antibiotics. Check with your pharmacist.
- It can make the effects of alcohol stronger.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Isoptin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Swollen ankles or feet
- Flushing (warm, red face)
- Headache, especially at first
- Feeling dizzy or tired
- Constipation (very common with verapamil)
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- Chest pain that is new or worse than usual
- A very fast, slow or uneven heartbeat
- A very slow heartbeat, feeling faint or short of breath
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, usually 1 to 3 times a day.
- Swallow slow-release tablets whole with water, preferably with food. Do not chew or crush them.
- A common adult dose is 120 mg to 480 mg a day, depending on the condition and tablet type.
- Eat plenty of fibre and drink water to help prevent constipation.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Isoptin for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Isoptin?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWhy are my ankles swollen on Isoptin?
- A
Ankle swelling is a common side effect. Raising your feet when sitting can help. Tell your doctor if it is bad, as the dose or medicine can be changed.
- QWhy am I constipated on Isoptin?
- A
Verapamil slows the gut. Eating more fibre, drinking water and staying active usually helps. Ask your pharmacist about a gentle laxative if needed.
