Adalat contains Nifedipine.

Nifedipine is a medicine for high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). It belongs to a group called calcium channel blockers.

It is usually given as a long-acting (slow-release) tablet taken once or twice a day. It is also used for Raynaud's phenomenon, where fingers and toes turn white and painful in the cold.

What is it used for?

High blood pressure (hypertension)
Long-term chest pain (angina)
Raynaud's phenomenon

How does it work?

Nifedipine stops calcium from entering the muscle cells in blood vessel walls. This relaxes and widens the blood vessels, so blood flows more easily and blood pressure goes down.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can raise the level of this medicine in your blood. Avoid them unless your doctor says otherwise.
Tell your doctor if you have heart failure, a narrow heart valve (aortic stenosis) or very low blood pressure.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not take it if you have had a heart attack in the last month or have unstable angina.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Adalat can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Swollen ankles or feet
Flushing (warm, red face)
Headache, especially at first
Feeling dizzy or tired

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
Chest pain that is new or worse than usual
A very fast, slow or uneven heartbeat

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, usually once or twice a day.
Swallow slow-release tablets whole with water. Do not chew, break or crush them.
A common adult dose is 30 mg to 60 mg once a day (slow-release), or 20 mg twice a day.
You may see the empty shell of the tablet in your stool. This is normal.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Do I need to take Adalat for the rest of my life?: Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
Can I drink alcohol with Adalat?: Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
What else can help my blood pressure?: Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
Why are my ankles swollen on Adalat?: Ankle swelling is a common side effect. Raising your feet when sitting can help. Tell your doctor if it is bad, as the dose or medicine can be changed.
I saw a tablet in my stool. Is Adalat working?: Yes. Some slow-release tablets leave an empty shell after the medicine has been released. This is normal.
