Naltrexone is a medicine that helps people stay free from alcohol or opioids (such as heroin or strong painkillers). It reduces cravings and blocks the "high".

It works best as part of a full treatment plan that includes counselling or a support programme.

What is it used for?

Alcohol dependence, to reduce cravings and heavy drinking
Preventing relapse in opioid dependence, after detox

How does it work?

Naltrexone blocks opioid receptors in the brain. This stops opioids from having an effect and reduces the pleasure and craving linked to alcohol.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

You must be completely free from opioids for at least 7 to 10 days before starting. Otherwise it can cause sudden, severe withdrawal.
It blocks opioid painkillers. In an emergency, tell medical staff you take naltrexone.
After stopping, you are much more sensitive to opioids. Taking your old dose could cause a fatal overdose.
Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
Carry a card saying you take naltrexone.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Naltrexone can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling sick
Headache
Dizziness or tiredness
Trouble sleeping or feeling anxious
Stomach pain

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or stomach pain (liver problems)
Signs of opioid withdrawal: sweating, shaking, vomiting, diarrhoea, goosebumps
Feeling very low or having thoughts of self-harm

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one tablet once a day, with or without food.
The usual dose is 50 mg once a day.
Your doctor may do a test to make sure you are free from opioids before you start.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Can I drink alcohol on Naltrexone?: It does not make you sick like disulfiram, but it is best to avoid alcohol, as your aim is to stop or cut down.
What if I need pain relief on Naltrexone?: Opioid painkillers will not work well. Tell your doctor or dentist so they can choose a different pain medicine.
Why is overdose risk higher after stopping Naltrexone?: Your body loses its tolerance to opioids. Even a dose you used to take could be dangerous.
