Cymbalta contains Duloxetine.

Duloxetine is an antidepressant from a group called SNRIs. Besides depression and anxiety, it is used for some types of long-term pain.

What is it used for?

Depression
Generalised anxiety disorder
Nerve pain caused by diabetes
Fibromyalgia and long-term muscle and joint pain

How does it work?

Duloxetine keeps more of two chemical messengers, serotonin and noradrenaline, available in the brain and spinal cord. This helps improve mood and anxiety, and can calm pain signals.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Antidepressants can, rarely, cause thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in people under 25 and in the first few weeks. Tell someone close to you that you are taking it and ask them to tell you if they notice changes in your mood or behaviour.
Do not take it with, or within 2 weeks of, an MAOI antidepressant (such as phenelzine or selegiline), or with linezolid or methylene blue.
Taking it with other medicines that raise serotonin (other antidepressants, tramadol, triptans for migraine, lithium, St John's wort) can cause serotonin syndrome.
It can raise the risk of bleeding, especially with aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or blood thinners.
Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, bipolar disorder or mania, glaucoma, heart problems, liver or kidney problems, or diabetes.
Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, electric-shock feelings, bad dreams and irritability. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly.
It may make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
It can raise blood pressure. Your doctor may check it regularly.
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or drink a lot of alcohol, as it can affect the liver.
Do not take it with fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Cymbalta can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling sick (nausea), especially in the first 1 to 2 weeks
Headache
Trouble sleeping or feeling sleepy
Sweating
Dry mouth
Lower sex drive, or trouble reaching orgasm or getting an erection
Constipation
Dizziness

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life
Feeling very high, overexcited or reckless (mania)
Fever, sweating, shaking, muscle twitching, fast heartbeat and confusion (possible serotonin syndrome)
A fit (seizure)
Unusual bleeding or bruising, or black stools
Confusion, headache and weakness, especially in older people (low sodium)
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or itching (liver problems)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day, at the same time each day.
Swallow the capsule whole. Do not open, crush or chew it. You can take it with or without food.
A common adult dose is 30 mg to 60 mg once a day, up to 120 mg.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long does Cymbalta take to work?: Some people notice better sleep or energy in 1 to 2 weeks, but it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full benefit on mood. Keep taking it even if you do not feel different straight away.
How long will I need to take Cymbalta?: Most people take it for at least 6 months after they feel better, to stop the depression or anxiety coming back. Your doctor will review this with you.
Can I drink alcohol with Cymbalta?: It is best to avoid alcohol. It can make you more drowsy and can make depression and anxiety worse.
Is Cymbalta addictive?: No, antidepressants are not addictive. But stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms, so always reduce slowly with your doctor.
