Drug Information
8 reviews for Ranitidine
Ranitidine is an H2 blocker, a medicine that reduces stomach acid. It was widely used for heartburn, indigestion and ulcers.
Important: in 2020, ranitidine was withdrawn from sale in the USA, UK, EU and many other countries because some products were found to contain an impurity (NDMA) that may cause cancer with long-term exposure. Talk to your doctor about safer alternatives such as famotidine or a proton pump inhibitor.
What is it used for?
- Heartburn and acid reflux
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
How does it work?
Ranitidine blocks histamine H2 receptors on the stomach cells that make acid. This lowers the amount of acid produced.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Many regulators have recalled ranitidine because of the NDMA impurity. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives before using it.
- See a doctor if you have trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomit blood or have black stools.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, or porphyria.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Ranitidine can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Headache
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Dizziness
- Tiredness
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- A fast, slow or uneven heartbeat
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Confusion (more common in older people)
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once or twice a day, as your doctor tells you, with or without food.
- A common adult dose is 150 mg twice a day or 300 mg at bedtime.
- For heartburn, you can take it 30 to 60 minutes before a meal that usually causes symptoms.
- Swallow the tablet with water.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QWhy was Ranitidine withdrawn in many countries?
- A
Some ranitidine products were found to contain small amounts of NDMA, a substance that may cause cancer if taken over long periods. Safer alternatives are available.
- QWhat can I use instead of Ranitidine?
- A
Famotidine (another H2 blocker) or a proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole are common choices. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- QHow fast does Ranitidine work?
- A
It usually starts to relieve heartburn within an hour.
