Pariet contains Rabeprazole.

Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It reduces stomach acid to treat heartburn, acid reflux and stomach ulcers, and helps the gut lining heal.

What is it used for?

Heartburn and acid reflux (GERD)
Stomach and duodenal ulcers
Clearing H. pylori, together with antibiotics

How does it work?

Rabeprazole switches off the proton pumps in the stomach lining that make acid.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

See a doctor before using it if you have trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomit blood, black stools, or are over 55 with new or changed indigestion. These can be signs of something more serious.
Long-term use can lower magnesium and vitamin B12 levels and may slightly raise the risk of bone fractures. Your doctor will review whether you still need it.
It can affect how some medicines work, such as clopidogrel (especially with omeprazole and esomeprazole), methotrexate, some HIV medicines and some antifungals.
Tell your doctor if you have liver problems or are due to have a stomach test (endoscopy or breath test).
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Pariet can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Headache
Diarrhoea or constipation
Stomach pain or wind
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Severe or long-lasting diarrhoea, especially if watery or bloody
Muscle cramps, shaking, an uneven heartbeat or fits (possible low magnesium, with long use)
A rash on sun-exposed skin with joint pain (a rare lupus-like reaction)
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day, usually in the morning before breakfast.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew or split it.
A common adult dose is 10 mg to 20 mg once a day.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long does Pariet take to work?: It often starts to ease heartburn within 1 to 3 days, but it can take up to 4 weeks for the full effect.
How long can I take Pariet for?: Many people only need a few weeks. Some need it long-term. Your doctor should review it regularly to use the lowest dose that works.
What else can help with heartburn?: Eating smaller meals, not eating 3 hours before bed, raising the head of your bed, losing extra weight, and cutting down on alcohol, coffee, fatty and spicy food can all help.
