Zyloprim contains Allopurinol.
Allopurinol is a medicine that lowers uric acid in the blood. It is used to prevent gout attacks and some types of kidney stones.
It does not treat a gout attack that has already started. It is taken every day for the long term.
What is it used for?
- Preventing gout attacks
- Preventing uric acid and some calcium kidney stones
- Preventing high uric acid during cancer treatment
How does it work?
Uric acid is made from the breakdown of substances called purines. Allopurinol blocks an enzyme (xanthine oxidase) that makes uric acid, so less is produced.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- A skin rash can be the first sign of a serious reaction. Stop taking it and see a doctor straight away if you get a rash.
- People of Han Chinese, Korean or Thai descent may carry a gene (HLA-B*5801) that raises the risk of a serious skin reaction. Your doctor may test for it.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- It interacts with azathioprine and mercaptopurine. These need much lower doses if taken together.
- Gout attacks may happen more often in the first few months. Your doctor may give you colchicine or an anti-inflammatory to prevent this.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Zyloprim can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Rash
- Gout flare-ups in the first months
- Feeling sick or diarrhoea
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- A rash, especially with fever, peeling skin, blisters, sore mouth or eyes (possible serious skin reaction)
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Fever, swollen glands and feeling unwell
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once a day, after a meal, with plenty of water.
- Your doctor will start at 100 mg a day and increase slowly, often to 300 mg a day, until uric acid is on target.
- Drink at least 2 litres of fluid a day.
- Keep taking it even during a gout attack.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
