Alfuzosin is a medicine for men with an enlarged prostate. It relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to pass urine.

What is it used for?

How does it work?

Alfuzosin blocks alpha-1 receptors in the prostate and bladder neck, relaxing the muscles so urine can flow more easily.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

It can cause dizziness or fainting, especially when you stand up or after the first dose.
Tell your doctor if you are going to have cataract or glaucoma surgery. It can affect the eye during the operation.
Tell your doctor if you take erection medicines, other alpha blockers or blood pressure medicines.
Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
Tell your doctor if you have a heart rhythm problem (long QT).
Do not take it with ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Uroxatral can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Dizziness, especially when standing up
Ejaculation problems, such as less or no semen
Headache
Stuffy nose

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Fainting
An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or a severe rash

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one tablet (10 mg) once a day, straight after the same meal each day.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew or split it.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How soon will Uroxatral help?: Many men notice easier urine flow within a few days to 2 weeks.
Why does Uroxatral affect ejaculation?: It relaxes muscles around the bladder neck, which can reduce semen. This is harmless and goes away if you stop.
Can I take Uroxatral with erection medicines like sildenafil?: Sometimes, but together they can lower blood pressure and make you dizzy. Ask your doctor first. They may suggest taking them at different times.
