Augmentin is an antibiotic that contains two ingredients: amoxicillin (a penicillin) and clavulanic acid (also called clavulanate). It treats infections caused by bacteria, including some that amoxicillin alone cannot clear.
It is often used for sinus, ear, chest, skin, dental, urinary and animal bite infections.

How does it work?
Some bacteria make a chemical that breaks down amoxicillin before it can work. Clavulanic acid blocks that chemical. This protects the amoxicillin so it can stop the bacteria building their outer wall, which kills them.
