Haridra is turmeric (Curcuma longa), the golden spice used in cooking. As a supplement, it is traditionally used to support healthy skin, joints and the body's natural response to inflammation.

Curcumin, the main active part of turmeric, has been widely studied. Some studies suggest it may help joint pain a little, but it is not well absorbed by the body.

How does it work?

Curcumin in turmeric is thought to calm some of the body's inflammation pathways and act as an antioxidant.

This is a herbal supplement, not a licensed medicine. Its claims have not been checked in the same way as medicines, and scientific evidence for it is limited.
Do not use it instead of medicine your doctor has prescribed. Do not stop your prescribed medicines without talking to your doctor.
"Natural" does not always mean safe. Herbs can cause side effects and can interact with medicines.
Talk to your doctor before using it if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding, have a long-term illness, or are having surgery.
Not for children unless a doctor says so.
Read the ingredient list on the pack carefully, especially if you have allergies.
Tell your doctor if you have gallstones or bile duct problems, as turmeric can make them worse.
Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines (such as warfarin, clopidogrel or aspirin), as turmeric may increase bleeding.
Stop taking it 2 weeks before surgery.
Tell your doctor if you have iron-deficiency anaemia or take diabetes medicines.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Haridra can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Mild stomach upset, wind or loose stools
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, swelling of the face or lips, or trouble breathing
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools (a rare liver reaction to some herbs)
Any new or worrying symptom after starting it

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Follow the dose on the pack. A common adult dose is 1 capsule twice a day after meals.
Swallow the capsule with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Is Haridra a medicine?: No. It is a traditional herbal supplement. It is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Can I take Haridra with my regular medicines?: Some herbs can interact with medicines. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
How long does Haridra take to work?: Herbal supplements usually work slowly, if at all. Many people take them for a few weeks to months. If you notice no benefit after 2 to 3 months, it may not be helping you.
