Drug Information
1 review for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)
HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone given as an injection.
HCG is a natural hormone made during pregnancy. As a medicine, it is used in fertility treatment to trigger ovulation (release of an egg) in women, and to help men who have low testosterone or low sperm production because of a pituitary problem.
It must only be used under a fertility specialist or doctor. It is not approved for weight loss, and it does not help people lose weight.
What is it used for?
- Triggering ovulation in fertility treatment
- Low testosterone or sperm production in men caused by pituitary problems
- Undescended testicles in boys (some countries)
How does it work?
HCG acts like LH, a natural hormone from the pituitary gland. In women, it causes the final ripening and release of an egg. In men, it stimulates the testicles to make testosterone and sperm.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- It can cause ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women, where the ovaries swell and fluid builds up.
- It increases the chance of twins or more.
- Do not use it if you have a tumour of the pituitary, ovary, breast, womb, testicle or prostate, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
- It can affect pregnancy test results for up to 10 days.
- It is not a weight-loss treatment.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, HCG can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Pain, redness or bruising where you inject
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Mood changes
- Breast tenderness (in men and women)
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Severe stomach pain, swelling, sickness, quick weight gain or breathlessness (possible OHSS)
- Pain, swelling or redness in one leg (possible blood clot)
- Signs of an allergic reaction
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Use it exactly as your doctor or fertility clinic tells you. Doses and timing vary.
- For fertility, a single injection (often 5,000 to 10,000 units) is given at a set time to trigger ovulation.
- Mix the powder with the liquid provided if needed, then inject under the skin or into a muscle as you have been shown.
- Use a new needle each time and put used needles in a sharps bin.
If you miss a dose: Timing is very important. Contact your clinic straight away if you miss a dose.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in the fridge (2°C to 8°C) or as the pack says. Once mixed, use it straight away or as instructed.
