I pill to prevent pregnancy after an act of unprotected sexual intercourse. It is an emergency contraceptive pill containing a synthetic hormone-like substance, levonorgestrel. The pill prevents about 85% of expected pregnancies when it is taken within three days of unprotected sex. It will not prevent pregnancy in every instance.
