Loratadine is a once-a-day antihistamine for allergies. It relieves hay fever symptoms like sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes, and eases hives. Most people do not feel sleepy with it.

What is it used for?

Hay fever and year-round allergies
Hives and itchy skin rashes

How does it work?

Loratadine blocks histamine, the chemical your body releases during an allergic reaction. This stops sneezing, itching and swelling.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some people still feel a little sleepy. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and be careful with alcohol.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Alavert can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Headache
Dry mouth
Feeling tired or a little sleepy
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing
A fast or uneven heartbeat

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one tablet once a day, with or without food.
The usual dose for adults and children aged 12 and over is 10 mg once a day.
Swallow the tablet with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How quickly does Alavert work?: Most people feel relief within 1 to 3 hours.
Can I take Alavert every day?: Yes. For hay fever or long-lasting hives, it can be taken every day during the season or for as long as needed.
Can I drink alcohol with Alavert?: It is best to limit alcohol. Together they can make you more drowsy, even with antihistamines that do not usually cause sleepiness.
