Ramistar H 5/12.5 mg is used to treat mild to moderate hypertension in patients in whom combination therapy is appropriate. It combines two medicines, Ramipril and hydrochlorothiazide. Rampiril belongs to a class of medicines known as ACE inhibitors, which are generally most effective when treating high blood pressure. The class of drugs has the advantage of good tolerability and no adverse metabolic effects. Also, no clinically relevant electrolyte effects other than a tendency to increase serum potassium concentrations in some patients with kidney impairment. Restricting the Angiotensin-converting enzyme (an enzyme responsible for causing constriction of blood vessels) improves blood flow around the body. Thiazide diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), has been first line antihypertensive agents for decades. Acting directly on the kidney, they improve renal excretion of salt and chloride. They may ultimately produce a long-term decrease in vascular resistance (resistance that must be managed to push blood through the circulatory system and allow blood flow). Furthermore, patients who are unresponsive to the usual dosage do not benefit from the higher dosage and are more likely to produce adverse reactions. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have any doubts about using this medication.
