Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. Telmisartan is used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure; it was launched in 1999. In older people, i.e., people 55 years or above, this drug is beneficial in decreasing the chance of heart attack, stroke, or death. Telmisartan controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. It is a sign of hypertension when your blood pressure stays higher than is needed, even when you are calm or relaxed. Normal blood pressure at rest is 80/120 mm Hg. Your blood pressure may decrease during the first 2 weeks of your treatment, but it may take 4 weeks for you to notice the full benefits of Telmisartan. The drug contains Telmisartan which belongs to a group of medicines called Angiotensin-II receptor antagonists. This drug acts by reducing the effect of Angiotensin (narrowing of blood vessels). Telmisartan causes vasodilation and relaxes the blood vessels to smoothen the blood flow.
