Antabuse contains Disulfiram.
Disulfiram is a medicine that helps people who are trying to stay away from alcohol. It does not reduce cravings. Instead, it makes you feel very ill if you drink, which helps you stick to your decision not to drink.
It works best as part of a full support plan that includes counselling or a support group.
What is it used for?
- Supporting people to stay alcohol-free after they have stopped drinking
How does it work?
Disulfiram blocks an enzyme the body uses to break down alcohol. If you drink, a toxic chemical called acetaldehyde builds up, causing flushing, a pounding headache, sickness, vomiting and a fast heartbeat.

- Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
- Blurred vision
- Confusion or strange behaviour
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once a day, in the morning. If it makes you sleepy, take it at bedtime.
- The usual dose is 250 mg once a day. Some people start with a higher dose for a short time.
- The tablets can be swallowed or crushed and mixed with liquid.
