5 reviews for Digoxin
Digoxin is one of the oldest heart medicines. It comes from the foxglove plant. It helps control a fast, uneven heartbeat called atrial fibrillation and can help a weak heart pump more strongly in heart failure.
The difference between a helpful dose and a harmful dose of digoxin is small, so your doctor will check your blood levels and watch you closely.
What is it used for?
- Atrial fibrillation or flutter, to slow the heart rate
- Heart failure, to ease symptoms
How does it work?
Digoxin makes each heartbeat a bit stronger and slows the electrical signals passing through the heart. This lets the heart fill and pump more efficiently.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Digoxin leaves the body through the kidneys, so levels can build up.
- Low potassium or magnesium, or high calcium, make side effects more likely. Tell your doctor if you have vomiting or diarrhoea, or take water tablets.
- Many medicines change digoxin levels, including amiodarone, verapamil, some antibiotics, and antacids. Check with your pharmacist.
- Do not take St John's wort, as it lowers digoxin levels.
- Older people are more sensitive to digoxin.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Digoxin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick or loss of appetite
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness or tiredness
- Rash
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Being sick, severe loss of appetite, or confusion (possible digoxin poisoning)
- Blurred vision, or seeing yellow or green halos around lights
- A very slow, fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once a day, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food, but avoid high-fibre meals (like bran) at the same time.
- A common adult dose is 62.5 micrograms to 250 micrograms (0.0625 mg to 0.25 mg) once a day. Your doctor will set it using blood tests and your kidney function.
- Go to all your blood tests.
If you miss a dose: If you remember within 12 hours, take it. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip it and take the next dose as normal. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QWhy do I need blood tests on Digoxin?
- A
The safe range for digoxin is narrow. Blood tests make sure your level is high enough to work but not too high.
- QWhat are the signs of too much Digoxin?
- A
Feeling sick, vomiting, loss of appetite, confusion, yellow-green vision, or a slow or uneven heartbeat. Contact your doctor straight away if you notice these.
- QCan I take antacids with Digoxin?
- A
Take antacids at least 2 hours apart from digoxin, as they can stop it being absorbed.
- QShould I check my pulse on Digoxin?
- A
Your doctor may ask you to. If your pulse is below 60 beats a minute or very irregular, contact your doctor.
