5 reviews for Amiloride (Midamor)
Midamor contains Amiloride.
Amiloride is a mild "water tablet" (diuretic) that helps the body keep potassium. It is usually given together with another water tablet that tends to lower potassium.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure, together with other water tablets
- Fluid build-up from heart failure or liver disease
How does it work?
Amiloride makes the kidneys pass out a little more salt and water, while stopping potassium from being lost.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Tell your doctor if you have gout, diabetes, kidney or liver problems.
- It can change the levels of salts such as potassium and sodium in your blood. Your doctor may do blood tests.
- Drink enough fluid, especially in hot weather or if you are sick or have diarrhoea, to avoid becoming dehydrated.
- It can raise potassium to dangerous levels. Do not take potassium supplements or salt substitutes, and tell your doctor if you take ACE inhibitors or ARBs.
- Do not take it if you have kidney failure or high potassium.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Midamor can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Needing to pass urine more often, especially in the first few hours after a dose
- Feeling dizzy or light-headed
- Feeling thirsty or having a dry mouth
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- Muscle cramps, weakness, confusion or an uneven heartbeat (possible salt or potassium problems)
- Very little urine, extreme thirst or feeling very dizzy (dehydration)
- Muscle weakness, tingling, or a slow or uneven heartbeat (high potassium)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it in the morning, so that you are not up at night to pass urine.
- Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
- A common adult dose is 5 mg to 10 mg once a day.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Midamor for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Midamor?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWhat is the best time to take Midamor?
- A
In the morning. If you need a second dose, take it no later than mid-afternoon, so you are not woken at night to pass urine.
