Lopressor contains Metoprolol.
Metoprolol is a beta blocker. It is used for high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), heart failure and to protect the heart after a heart attack.
It comes as a regular tablet taken twice a day and as a long-acting (extended-release) tablet taken once a day.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Angina (chest pain)
- Heart failure (extended-release form)
- Protecting the heart after a heart attack
- Preventing migraine and controlling some fast heartbeats
How does it work?
Metoprolol blocks the effect of adrenaline on the heart. This slows the heartbeat and lowers blood pressure, so the heart uses less oxygen.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause chest pain, a fast heartbeat or even a heart attack. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly if you need to stop.
- Tell your doctor if you have asthma or COPD, a slow heartbeat, heart block, very poor circulation in the hands or feet, or uncontrolled heart failure.
- If you have diabetes, it can hide signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat. Check your sugar more often.
- Tell your doctor if you take verapamil or diltiazem, as the combination can slow the heart too much.
- Tell your surgeon or dentist that you take it before any operation.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Lopressor can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling tired
- Cold hands and feet
- Dizziness
- Slow heartbeat
- Trouble sleeping or vivid dreams
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- A very slow heartbeat, or feeling faint or short of breath
- Wheezing or tight chest
- Swollen ankles and weight gain with more breathlessness (worsening heart failure)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it at the same time each day, exactly as your doctor tells you.
- Swallow the tablet with a glass of water.
- Take it with or just after a meal.
- Swallow extended-release tablets whole or split them only if they have a score line. Do not crush or chew them.
- A common adult dose is 50 mg to 100 mg twice a day (regular tablet) or 25 mg to 200 mg once a day (extended-release).
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Lopressor for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Lopressor?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QCan I stop Lopressor if I feel fine?
- A
No. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous for your heart. Always talk to your doctor, who will lower the dose slowly.
