5 reviews for Lisinopril + Hydrochlorothiazide (Zestoretic)
Zestoretic combines two blood pressure medicines in one tablet: lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide. It is used when one medicine alone has not lowered blood pressure enough.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
How does it work?
Lisinopril relaxes blood vessels by blocking an enzyme called ACE. Hydrochlorothiazide is a "water tablet" that helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water. Together they lower blood pressure more than either alone.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Do not take it if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. It can harm the unborn baby.
- Do not take it if you have ever had angioedema (sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat), or if you take sacubitril/valsartan.
- Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium unless your doctor says so.
- Painkillers like ibuprofen and naproxen can reduce its effect and affect your kidneys.
- Tell your doctor if you take lithium, or aliskiren.
- If you have diarrhoea or sickness and cannot keep fluids down, ask your doctor whether to pause it.
- The water tablet can raise blood sugar and uric acid (tell your doctor if you have diabetes or gout), lower potassium and salt levels, and make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
- Do not take it if you are allergic to "sulfa" medicines or pass very little urine.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Zestoretic can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- A dry, tickly cough that does not go away
- Dizziness, especially after the first dose
- Headache
- Feeling tired
- Needing to pass urine more often
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- Muscle weakness, a slow or uneven heartbeat (possible high potassium)
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Sudden eye pain or blurred vision
- Severe thirst, muscle cramps, confusion or weakness
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take one tablet once a day, preferably in the morning.
- Swallow it with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Zestoretic for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Zestoretic?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWhy do I have a dry cough on Zestoretic?
- A
A dry cough is a common side effect of this group of medicines. It is not harmful, but if it bothers you, your doctor can switch you to a different medicine.
