Drug Information
5 reviews for Amantadine
Amantadine is a medicine with two main uses. It helps ease stiffness, shaking and slow movement in Parkinson's disease, and it helps with movement problems caused by some other medicines.
It was also used to treat and prevent influenza A (flu), but most flu viruses today are resistant to it, so it is rarely used for flu now.
What is it used for?
- Parkinson's disease, to ease stiffness, tremor and slow movement
- Movement problems (such as twitching or stiffness) caused by certain medicines
- Influenza A, in rare cases where the virus is known to respond
How does it work?
In Parkinson's disease, amantadine helps the brain release more of a chemical messenger called dopamine and calms another chemical called glutamate. This improves movement.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

- It can make you dizzy, blurred or sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.

- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Dry mouth or constipation

- Blotchy purple-red patches on the legs (livedo reticularis)

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Confusion, seeing things that are not there, or feeling very anxious or low
- Strong urges to gamble, shop or eat that are hard to control

- A fit (seizure)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, usually once or twice a day.
- Swallow the capsule or tablet with water. You can take it with or without food.
- Take your last dose in the afternoon, not at bedtime, as it can make it hard to sleep.
- A common adult dose for Parkinson's is 100 mg once or twice a day.
- If you want to stop, talk to your doctor. They will lower the dose slowly.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose or late in the evening. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QWhy should I not take Amantadine at bedtime?

Some people get a lacy purple pattern on the legs. It is usually harmless and fades if the medicine is stopped, but tell your doctor.
- QDoes Amantadine still work for flu?
