Acivir Cream is an antiviral cream that contains acyclovir (aciclovir). It is put directly on cold sores on the lips and face to help them heal faster.

It works best if you start using it as soon as you feel the first tingle, before a blister appears.

What is it used for?

Cold sores on the lips and face (herpes simplex)
Mild herpes sores on the skin, as advised by your doctor

How does it work?

The herpes virus needs to copy itself to spread. Acyclovir blocks the virus from copying its DNA inside infected skin cells. This helps the sore heal faster and can make it smaller and less painful.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not use it if you are allergic to acyclovir, valacyclovir or any ingredient in the cream.
It is only for the skin. Do not put it in your eyes, inside your mouth or inside the vagina.
Cold sores are very catching. Do not kiss anyone or share towels, cups or lip balm while you have a sore.
See a doctor if you have a weak immune system, very frequent or severe cold sores, or sores near your eyes.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Acivir Cream can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Mild burning or stinging where the cream is applied
Dry or flaky skin
Mild itching or redness

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

A rash, swelling or itching that spreads (possible allergic reaction)
A sore that spreads, gets worse, or is not healing after 10 days

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Wash your hands before and after using it.
Put a thin layer on the sore and the skin around it about 5 times a day, roughly every 4 hours while you are awake.
Use it for 5 days. If the sore has not healed, you can use it for up to 5 more days.
Use a clean cotton bud to apply it if you prefer, to avoid spreading the virus to your fingers.

If you miss a dose: Apply it as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal. Do not use extra cream to make up.

If you use too much: If you accidentally swallow some cream, it is unlikely to cause harm, but contact a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

When should I start using Acivir Cream?: As soon as you feel tingling or itching, before the blister forms. Starting early gives the best results.
Can I put make-up over Acivir Cream?: It is best not to, as it can spread the virus and keep the cream from working. If you must, use a clean disposable applicator.
Will Acivir Cream stop cold sores coming back?: No. It helps each outbreak heal faster, but it does not remove the virus from your body.
