Betnovate contains Betamethasone.

Betamethasone cream is a strong steroid cream. It reduces redness, itching and swelling in skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.

Because it is strong, it should be used for short periods and on small areas, unless your doctor says otherwise.

What is it used for?

Eczema and dermatitis
Psoriasis (not widespread plaque psoriasis)
Other itchy, inflamed skin conditions that have not responded to weaker creams

How does it work?

Betamethasone is a steroid that calms inflammation in the skin, reducing redness, swelling and itching.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

It is for use on the skin only. Keep it away from your eyes, mouth and inside your nose.
Do not use it if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not use it on the face, groin, armpits or under nappies unless your doctor tells you to.
Do not use it on skin infections (bacterial, fungal or viral), acne, rosacea or around the mouth.
Do not cover it with airtight dressings unless your doctor says so.
Do not use it for longer than your doctor says, usually no more than 4 weeks.
Not usually for children under 1 year.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Betnovate can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Mild burning or stinging when first applied
Dryness

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Thin, shiny skin, stretch marks or easy bruising where it is used
Signs of skin infection, such as pus or spreading redness
A rash that gets worse or spreads

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin once or twice a day.
Rub it in gently until it disappears.
A fingertip unit (a line of cream from the tip of an adult finger to the first joint) covers an area about the size of two adult hands.
Wash your hands afterwards, unless you are treating your hands.
Once the skin improves, your doctor may tell you to use it less often or switch to a weaker cream.

If you miss a dose: Apply it as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal. Do not use extra to make up.

If you use too much: If you accidentally swallow some, contact a doctor, pharmacist or poison control centre for advice.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
