Aleve contains Naproxen.
Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory painkiller. It relieves pain, swelling and stiffness, and it lasts longer than ibuprofen, so it is taken less often.
What is it used for?
- Arthritis (rheumatoid and osteoarthritis) and ankylosing spondylitis
- Period pain
- Gout attacks
- Muscle and joint injuries
- Headache and toothache
How does it work?
Naproxen blocks the COX enzymes that make prostaglandins, the chemicals that cause pain and swelling.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Do not take it if you have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or if you are allergic to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory painkillers (for example, if they made your asthma worse).
- Do not take it if you have severe heart failure, severe kidney or liver disease, or in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
- Anti-inflammatory painkillers can slightly raise the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long use. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoke.
- Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen, naproxen or high-dose aspirin).
- Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, steroids, SSRI antidepressants, lithium, methotrexate, water tablets or blood pressure medicines.
- Use the lowest dose for the shortest time needed.
- Older people are more likely to have stomach bleeding and kidney problems.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.

Like all medicines, Aleve can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
- Feeling sick
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Headache or dizziness
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

- Black, tarry stools, or vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds (stomach bleeding)
- Chest pain, or sudden weakness, numbness or trouble speaking
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a severe rash with blisters
- Passing much less urine, or swelling of the legs
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

- A common adult dose is 250 mg to 500 mg twice a day.
- For gout, a higher starting dose may be used for a few days.
- Do not take more than prescribed.
If you miss a dose: If you take it regularly, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

- A
Yes. Taking it with or after food helps protect your stomach.
- QCan I take Aleve with paracetamol (acetaminophen)?
- A
Yes, they can usually be taken together, as they work in different ways. Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Aleve?

It is best to limit alcohol, as it raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
