Drug Information
4 reviews for Betaxolol (Betoptic)
Betoptic contains Betaxolol.
Betaxolol eye drops lower raised pressure inside the eye. They are used for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
Betaxolol mainly acts on the heart rather than the lungs, so it may be a little safer than some other beta blocker drops for people with mild breathing problems, but caution is still needed.
What is it used for?
- Open-angle glaucoma
- Ocular hypertension
How does it work?
Betaxolol reduces the amount of fluid the eye makes, which lowers the pressure inside the eye.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Glaucoma often has no symptoms until sight is lost, so use your drops every day even if your eyes feel fine. Lost sight cannot be restored, but treatment can protect the sight you have.
- If you wear soft contact lenses, take them out before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.
- If you use more than one kind of eye drop, wait at least 5 minutes between them.
- Do not let the tip of the bottle touch your eye or anything else, to keep the drops clean.
- Your vision may be blurred for a short time after using the drops. Do not drive until it clears.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Beta blocker eye drops can reach the rest of the body. Do not use them if you have asthma, severe COPD, a very slow heartbeat, heart block or uncontrolled heart failure.
- Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, an overactive thyroid, myasthenia gravis or poor circulation.
- Tell your doctor if you take beta blocker tablets or heart rhythm medicines.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Betoptic can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Stinging or discomfort when putting drops in
- Blurred vision for a short time
- Dry eyes
- Tiredness
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Eye pain, swelling, severe redness or discharge (possible infection or reaction)
- Sudden changes in eyesight
- Swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, or trouble breathing
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- A very slow heartbeat, fainting or feeling faint
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Use one drop in the affected eye(s) twice a day.
- Shake the bottle well before use if it is a suspension.
- Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drops.
If you miss a dose: Use it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not use extra drops to make up.
If you use too much: If you use too many drops, rinse your eye with warm water. If drops are swallowed by accident, especially by a child, contact a doctor.
How to store it: Keep the bottle tightly closed. Follow the storage instructions on the pack. Throw the bottle away 4 weeks after opening (unless the pack says otherwise).
- QHow do I put in Betoptic eye drops properly?
- A
Wash your hands. Tilt your head back, gently pull down your lower eyelid to make a small pocket, look up, and squeeze one drop into the pocket. Close your eye and press gently on the inner corner (near your nose) for 1 to 2 minutes. This keeps more medicine in the eye.
- QWill I need Betoptic forever?
- A
Glaucoma is a long-term condition, so most people need eye drops for life. Your eye doctor will check your eye pressure regularly.
- QWhat if I cannot tell if the drop went in?
- A
If you are not sure, you can use one more drop. Some people keep the bottle in the fridge (if allowed) so they can feel the cool drop.
