5 reviews for Chloroquine
Chloroquine is an antimalarial medicine. It is used to prevent and treat malaria in parts of the world where the malaria parasite has not become resistant to it.
Because resistance is now common in many regions, always follow up-to-date travel advice about which malaria medicine to take. It is also sometimes used for certain liver infections caused by amoebas.
What is it used for?
- Preventing malaria when travelling to areas where chloroquine still works
- Treating some types of malaria
- Amoebic liver abscess
How does it work?
Malaria parasites live inside red blood cells and feed on them. Chloroquine builds up inside the parasite and poisons it, so it dies.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Keep it out of the reach of children. Even a small number of tablets can be fatal to a child.
- Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, psoriasis, heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, G6PD deficiency or eye problems.
- Long-term use can damage the retina (back of the eye). Regular eye checks are needed.
- Antacids reduce how much you absorb. Take them at least 4 hours apart.
- No malaria medicine is 100% effective. Also use insect repellent, cover up and sleep under a net.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Chloroquine can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick, stomach pain or diarrhoea
- Headache
- Itching (more common in people of African descent)
- Blurred vision (usually temporary)
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Changes in eyesight that do not go away
- A fast or uneven heartbeat, or fainting
- A fit (seizure) or muscle weakness
- Fever or flu-like illness during or after travel (you may have malaria despite the medicine)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- For malaria prevention: take the dose once a week, on the same day each week. Start 1 week before travel, continue while there, and for 4 weeks after you return.
- Take it after a meal with water, to reduce stomach upset.
- A common adult prevention dose is 310 mg of chloroquine base (usually two 250 mg tablets) once a week. Treatment doses are different and set by your doctor.
- Keep taking it for the full 4 weeks after you leave the malaria area.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, then go back to your usual day.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QWhy do I take Chloroquine for 4 weeks after I come home?
- A
Parasites picked up near the end of your trip can take weeks to appear in the blood. The extra weeks make sure they are killed.
- QDoes Chloroquine work everywhere?
- A
No. In many areas, malaria parasites are resistant to it. Check travel advice for your destination.
- QWhat if I get a fever after my trip?
- A
See a doctor straight away and say where you travelled, even if you took your tablets.
