Drug Information
5 reviews for Clonidine
Clonidine is a medicine that lowers high blood pressure by acting on the brain. It is also used for hot flushes in menopause, ADHD, and to ease withdrawal symptoms from opioids.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Hot flushes during menopause
- ADHD (some forms)
- Preventing migraine, and easing opioid withdrawal symptoms
How does it work?
Clonidine acts on the brain to lower the signals that tighten blood vessels and speed up the heart. This relaxes blood vessels and slows the heart, lowering blood pressure.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure, with headache, shaking and agitation. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly.
- It can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol.
- Tell your doctor if you have a slow heartbeat, heart block, depression or Raynaud's phenomenon.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Clonidine can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sleepy or tired
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Feeling low
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- A very slow heartbeat
- A severe headache, shaking and pounding heart after missing doses
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it 2 or 3 times a day, exactly as your doctor tells you.
- Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food.
- A common adult dose for blood pressure is 0.1 mg twice a day, which may be raised slowly.
- If you take it twice a day, taking the larger dose at bedtime can help with sleepiness.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
