Premarin contains conjugated oestrogens, a mixture of oestrogen hormones. It is used to relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

What is it used for?

Menopause symptoms, such as hot flushes and night sweats
Vaginal dryness and discomfort
Preventing osteoporosis after menopause

How does it work?

It replaces the oestrogen that the ovaries stop making after menopause, which eases symptoms and helps protect bones.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

HRT can slightly raise the risk of blood clots, stroke, breast cancer and womb cancer. Your doctor will discuss the benefits and risks with you and review your treatment every year.
If you still have a womb, you need a progestogen as well as oestrogen, to protect the womb lining.
Do not take it if you have had breast cancer, womb cancer, blood clots, a stroke or heart attack, liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, migraine, epilepsy, diabetes, gallstones, endometriosis or fibroids.
Go for regular breast screening and check your breasts for changes.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Premarin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Breast tenderness
Bloating
Headache
Feeling sick
Spotting or breakthrough bleeding

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Pain, swelling or redness in one leg, or sudden chest pain and breathlessness (possible blood clot)
A lump in your breast
Unusual or heavy vaginal bleeding
Sudden weakness, numbness, severe headache or trouble speaking
Yellowing of the skin or eyes

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one tablet once a day, at the same time each day.
A common dose is 0.3 mg to 0.625 mg a day.
If you have a womb, take a progestogen as well.
Swallow the tablet whole with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is more than 12 hours late. Then skip it. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long can I take Premarin?: Many women take it for a few years to manage symptoms. Your doctor will review it each year.
How long before Premarin helps my hot flushes?: Usually within a few weeks, with full benefit in about 3 months.
Is Premarin a contraceptive?: No. HRT does not prevent pregnancy. If you still have periods, you may need contraception. Ask your doctor.
