Donepezil is a medicine for Alzheimer's disease. It can help with memory, thinking, and managing daily activities in mild, moderate and severe Alzheimer's disease.

What is it used for?

Alzheimer's disease (all stages)

How does it work?

In Alzheimer's disease, there is less acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for memory. Donepezil blocks the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, so more of it is available.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have a slow heartbeat, heart rhythm problems, stomach ulcers, asthma or COPD, seizures, or trouble passing urine.
Tell your doctor or anaesthetist that you take it before any operation.
It does not cure dementia, but it can help memory, thinking and daily activities for a while.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Aricept can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling sick or being sick
Diarrhoea
Loss of appetite and weight loss
Dizziness
Trouble sleeping or vivid dreams
Muscle cramps

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

A very slow heartbeat, fainting or dizziness
Black, tarry stools or vomit with blood (stomach bleeding)
A fit (seizure)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day at bedtime, with or without food.
The usual starting dose is 5 mg once a day for 4 to 6 weeks, then 10 mg once a day.
If you have vivid dreams, your doctor may suggest taking it in the morning.

If you miss a dose: Skip the missed dose and take the next one at the normal time. Never take two doses at once. If you miss several days, ask your doctor before restarting.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Will Aricept cure Alzheimer's disease?: No. It does not stop the disease, but it can help with symptoms for a period of time.
How will we know if Aricept is working?: Your doctor will review memory, thinking and daily activities after a few months. Some people stay the same for a while, which can be a good result.
What if Aricept makes me feel sick?: Nausea is common at the start or after a dose increase, and often settles. Taking it with food can help.
