3 reviews for Enoxaparin (Clexane)
Clexane contains Enoxaparin.
Enoxaparin is a blood thinner given as an injection under the skin. It belongs to a group called low molecular weight heparins.
It is used to prevent clots after surgery or during long periods of bed rest, and to treat clots in the legs (DVT) and lungs (PE). It is often used in pregnancy because it does not cross to the baby.
What is it used for?
- Preventing blood clots after surgery or while in bed for a long time
- Treating DVT and PE
- Treating some types of heart attack and unstable angina, in hospital
How does it work?
Enoxaparin boosts a natural substance in the blood called antithrombin, which switches off clotting proteins. This stops clots forming or getting bigger.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- This medicine makes you bleed more easily. Tell every doctor, dentist and pharmacist that you take it, especially before surgery or dental work.
- Do not take painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen unless your doctor says so. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is usually safer.
- Tell your doctor if you have a bleeding problem, a stomach ulcer, recent surgery, a recent stroke or bleed, very high blood pressure, or liver or kidney problems.
- Many medicines and herbal remedies (such as St John's wort, fish oil and ginkgo) can change how it works. Always check before taking anything new.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
- Carry a card or alert that says you take a blood thinner.
- Do not use it if you have ever had a low platelet count caused by heparin (HIT).
- Tell your doctor if you are having a spinal or epidural injection. Special timing is needed to avoid bleeding around the spine.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Clexane can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Bruising more easily
- Bleeding gums when brushing
- Nosebleeds
- Heavier periods
- Bruising, pain or a small lump where you inject
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Blood in your urine (pink, red or brown) or black, tarry stools
- Coughing up blood or vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds
- A nosebleed or cut that will not stop bleeding
- A severe headache, sudden weakness, confusion or trouble speaking (possible bleeding in the brain)
- A fall or bang to the head, even if you feel fine
- Numbness, weakness or tingling in the legs after a spinal or epidural procedure
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Your nurse or doctor will show you how to inject it. Do not inject it into a muscle.
- Wash your hands. Sit or lie down and choose a spot on your belly, at least 5 cm (2 inches) from your belly button, and switch sides each time.
- Gently pinch a fold of skin, insert the whole needle straight in, and push the plunger all the way. Do not expel the small air bubble in the syringe first.
- Remove the needle and let go of the skin. Do not rub the spot.
- A common dose for preventing clots is 40 mg once a day. Treatment doses are based on body weight.
- Put used syringes in a sharps bin.
If you miss a dose: Inject it as soon as you remember the same day. Never inject two doses at once. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Store below 25°C (77°F). Do not freeze. Do not use a syringe if the liquid is cloudy or has particles.
- QWhat should I do before dental work on Clexane?
- A
Tell your dentist you take a blood thinner. For most simple treatments you keep taking it, but your dentist or doctor will tell you if anything needs to change.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Clexane?
- A
Small amounts are usually OK, but heavy drinking raises the risk of bleeding.
- QWhy is Clexane injected into the belly?
- A
The belly has a good layer of fat under the skin, which lets the medicine be absorbed steadily.

Felix Roy –
I ordered from here after comparing a few options. The total I saw at checkout was the total I paid. I should add that everything was in order when I opened the box. I liked that the site did not make things complicated.
