Drug Information
1 review for Ticagrelor (Brilinta)
Brilinta contains Ticagrelor.
Ticagrelor is an antiplatelet medicine. It stops platelets from sticking together and forming clots in the arteries of the heart.
It is taken together with low-dose aspirin after a heart attack or unstable angina, and to lower the risk of another heart event.
What is it used for?
- After a heart attack or unstable angina, together with aspirin
- Lowering the risk of future heart attacks and strokes in some people
How does it work?
Ticagrelor blocks a receptor on platelets that makes them clump together. This lowers the chance of a clot forming in a heart artery or stent.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Do not stop taking it without talking to your heart doctor. Stopping early raises the risk of a heart attack or clot in a stent.
- Do not take aspirin doses above 100 mg a day with it, as higher doses make ticagrelor work less well.
- Tell your doctor if you have a bleeding problem, a history of brain bleeding, liver problems, asthma or COPD, or a slow heartbeat.
- Strong "blocking" medicines like ketoconazole, clarithromycin and ritonavir must not be taken with it.
- Tell every doctor and dentist you take it.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Brilinta can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling short of breath (usually mild and often goes away)
- Bruising more easily
- Nosebleeds
- Raised uric acid (gout)
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Black, tarry stools, or vomit with blood
- Bleeding that will not stop
- A severe headache, sudden weakness, confusion or trouble speaking
- Feeling faint, or a very slow heartbeat
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it twice a day, about 12 hours apart.
- Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food. It can be crushed and mixed with water if you cannot swallow it.
- The usual dose after a heart attack is 90 mg twice a day for 12 months, then 60 mg twice a day for some people.
- Take low-dose aspirin (75 mg to 100 mg) as well, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
If you miss a dose: Skip the missed dose and take the next one at the normal time. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
