Lopid contains Gemfibrozil.

Gemfibrozil is a medicine that lowers triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) and raises "good" HDL cholesterol.

It is used for very high triglycerides, to lower the risk of pancreatitis, and in some people to lower heart risk.

What is it used for?

Very high triglycerides
Low "good" cholesterol with high triglycerides

How does it work?

Gemfibrozil helps the body break down fats faster and makes the liver produce less triglyceride.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, drink a lot of alcohol, have an underactive thyroid, or have had muscle problems with a cholesterol medicine.
Do not take it if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some medicines raise the risk of muscle problems, such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, some HIV and hepatitis C medicines, ciclosporin, gemfibrozil and some antifungals. Check with your pharmacist.
Keep eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat. The medicine works best together with healthy habits.
Do not take it with simvastatin or repaglinide. Taking it with other statins raises the risk of muscle damage.
Tell your doctor if you have gallbladder disease, liver or kidney problems.
It can make warfarin stronger.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Lopid can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Muscle aches or joint pain
Headache
Constipation, wind or indigestion
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever, feeling unwell or dark urine
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing
Severe stomach pain (possible gallstones)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it twice a day, 30 minutes before breakfast and the evening meal.
The usual adult dose is 600 mg twice a day.
Swallow the tablet with water.
Your doctor will check your blood fats with blood tests.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long do I need to take Lopid?: Usually for life. It only keeps cholesterol down while you take it.
What if I get muscle aches on Lopid?: Mild aches are fairly common. If you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, especially with dark urine, contact your doctor straight away.
Can I drink alcohol with Lopid?: Small amounts are usually fine. Heavy drinking can harm your liver.
