Tricor contains Fenofibrate.

Fenofibrate is a medicine that mainly lowers triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood). It also lowers "bad" cholesterol and raises "good" cholesterol a little.

Very high triglycerides can cause pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas.

What is it used for?

How does it work?

Fenofibrate switches on a protein called PPAR-alpha, which helps the body break down fats faster and make less triglyceride.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, drink a lot of alcohol, have an underactive thyroid, or have had muscle problems with a cholesterol medicine.
Do not take it if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some medicines raise the risk of muscle problems, such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, some HIV and hepatitis C medicines, ciclosporin, gemfibrozil and some antifungals. Check with your pharmacist.
Keep eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat. The medicine works best together with healthy habits.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, gallbladder disease or pancreatitis.
It can make warfarin stronger.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Tricor can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Muscle aches or joint pain
Headache
Constipation, wind or indigestion
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever, feeling unwell or dark urine
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing
Severe stomach pain spreading to your back (possible pancreatitis or gallstones)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day with a meal, usually the main meal.
Swallow the tablet or capsule whole with water.
A common adult dose is 145 mg to 200 mg once a day, depending on the product.
Your doctor will check your blood fats, liver and kidneys with blood tests.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long do I need to take Tricor?: Usually for life. It only keeps cholesterol down while you take it.
What if I get muscle aches on Tricor?: Mild aches are fairly common. If you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, especially with dark urine, contact your doctor straight away.
Can I drink alcohol with Tricor?: Small amounts are usually fine. Heavy drinking can harm your liver.
