8 reviews for Irbesartan (Avapro)
Avapro contains Irbesartan.
Irbesartan is a medicine that lowers high blood pressure. It belongs to a group called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs).
It also helps protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Kidney disease caused by type 2 diabetes
How does it work?
Your body makes a hormone called angiotensin II that squeezes blood vessels tight. Irbesartan blocks this hormone, so blood vessels relax and widen. This lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Do not take it if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant. It can harm the unborn baby. Tell your doctor straight away if you become pregnant.
- Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium unless your doctor says so.
- Painkillers like ibuprofen and naproxen can reduce its effect and affect your kidneys. Ask your pharmacist before taking them.
- Tell your doctor if you take lithium, or aliskiren (especially if you have diabetes).
- If you have diarrhoea or sickness and cannot keep fluids down, ask your doctor whether to pause it for a day or two.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Avapro can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Dizziness
- Feeling tired
- Headache
- Back or muscle pain
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- Muscle weakness, a slow or uneven heartbeat (possible high potassium)
- Passing much less urine than usual
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once a day, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
- It can take 2 to 4 weeks to see the full effect on your blood pressure.
- The usual adult dose is 150 mg once a day, which may be increased to 300 mg.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Avapro for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Avapro?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWill Avapro give me a cough?
- A
A dry cough is uncommon with this type of medicine. It is often used for people who got a cough from ACE inhibitors like lisinopril.
