5 reviews for Linezolid (Zyvox)
Zyvox contains Linezolid.
Linezolid is a powerful antibiotic kept for serious infections, especially those caused by bacteria that other antibiotics can no longer kill (such as MRSA and VRE).
It is used for serious pneumonia and complicated skin infections, usually under close medical care.
What is it used for?
- Pneumonia caused by resistant bacteria
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
- Infections caused by MRSA or VRE
How does it work?
Linezolid stops bacteria from starting to make their proteins. This is a different way from most other antibiotics, which is why it works on resistant germs.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Do not take it if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this antibiotic or to a similar one.
- Antibiotics only work on infections caused by bacteria. They do not help colds, flu or most sore throats, which are caused by viruses.
- Take the whole course your doctor gives you, even if you feel better after a few days. Stopping early can let the infection come back and make germs harder to treat in the future.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding.
- Never share your antibiotics or keep leftovers for another time.
- Linezolid can react with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs), some migraine medicines, and cold medicines with pseudoephedrine. This can cause serotonin syndrome or a big rise in blood pressure.
- Avoid large amounts of foods rich in tyramine, such as aged cheese, cured meats, soy sauce, draught beer and red wine.
- It can lower blood cell counts, so you will need weekly blood tests. Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid or diabetes.
- It is usually not taken for longer than 28 days, because longer use can damage nerves in the eyes, hands and feet.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Zyvox can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick
- Diarrhoea or loose stools
- Stomach ache or indigestion
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Severe diarrhoea that is watery or has blood in it, even up to 2 months after you finish the medicine
- Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheezing or trouble breathing
- A skin rash that blisters or peels, with fever and sore mouth or eyes
- Changes in your eyesight, such as blurred vision or colours looking different
- Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
- Unusual bruising or bleeding, or feeling very tired and pale
- Fever, sweating, shaking, confusion and a fast heartbeat
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it twice a day, about 12 hours apart.
- Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.
- The usual adult dose is 600 mg twice a day for 10 to 14 days.
- Go to all your blood tests.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and carry on as normal. Never take two doses at once to make up.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QWhy can't I eat some foods while taking Zyvox?
- A
Foods high in tyramine, like aged cheese and cured meats, can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure when combined with linezolid. Eat them only in small amounts or avoid them.
- QWhy do I need blood tests on Zyvox?
- A
Linezolid can lower the number of blood cells. Weekly tests help catch this early.
- QCan I take my antidepressant with Zyvox?
- A
Tell your doctor before you start. Many antidepressants cannot be safely taken with linezolid.
