11 reviews for Aspirin
Aspirin is one of the oldest and best-known medicines. In normal doses, it relieves mild pain, fever and inflammation.
In low doses (75 mg to 100 mg, or 81 mg in the USA) taken every day, it thins the blood and helps prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who have already had one, or who have heart disease. Only take daily low-dose aspirin if your doctor recommends it.
What is it used for?
- Mild to moderate pain, such as headache, toothache and period pain
- Fever
- Preventing heart attacks and strokes in people with heart or artery disease (low dose)
How does it work?
Aspirin blocks enzymes called COX that make prostaglandins, chemicals that cause pain, fever and swelling. It also stops platelets from sticking together for their whole lifespan, which helps prevent clots.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Never give aspirin to children or teenagers under 16 unless a doctor says so. It can cause Reye's syndrome, a rare but serious illness of the liver and brain.
- Do not take it if you have a stomach ulcer, a bleeding problem, or asthma that is made worse by aspirin or other painkillers.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, gout, or high blood pressure.
- Do not take it with other blood thinners unless your doctor says so.
- Avoid it in the last 3 months of pregnancy unless your doctor prescribes a low dose.
- Alcohol raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Aspirin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Feeling sick
- Bruising more easily
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Black, tarry stools, or vomit with blood or that looks like coffee grounds
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- Ringing in the ears (can be a sign of too much aspirin)
- Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a severe rash
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- For pain or fever: adults take 300 mg to 900 mg every 4 to 6 hours if needed, up to 4 g a day.
- For heart protection: take one low-dose tablet (75 mg to 100 mg) once a day, as your doctor tells you.
- Take it with or after food to protect your stomach. Swallow coated tablets whole.
- Do not take it for pain for more than 3 days without advice.
If you miss a dose: For daily low-dose use, take it as soon as you remember the same day. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QShould I take a daily Aspirin to prevent a heart attack?
- A
Only if your doctor says so. For people without heart disease, the bleeding risk often outweighs the benefit.
- QCan children take Aspirin?
- A
Not under 16, unless a doctor prescribes it, because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
- QWhy take Aspirin with food?
- A
Food helps protect your stomach from irritation.
