Ditropan contains Oxybutynin.

Oxybutynin is a medicine for an overactive bladder. It reduces sudden, strong urges to pass urine, needing to go often, and leaks.

It comes as tablets and, in some forms, as a skin patch or gel that causes less dry mouth.

What is it used for?

Overactive bladder
Bladder spasms
Bedwetting in children (some countries)

How does it work?

Oxybutynin blocks acetylcholine, a nerve chemical that makes the bladder muscle squeeze. This relaxes the bladder, so it can hold more urine.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, trouble emptying your bladder, a blocked bowel, severe constipation, myasthenia gravis, or liver or kidney problems.
It can cause blurred vision and drowsiness. Do not drive until you know how it affects you.
It can reduce sweating. Avoid getting too hot.
Older people may be more likely to feel confused.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Ditropan can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Dry mouth
Constipation
Blurred vision
Headache
Dizziness

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Being unable to pass urine
Confusion or seeing things that are not there
A fast or uneven heartbeat
Swelling of the face, lips or throat

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Tablets: take 2.5 mg to 5 mg two or three times a day (or once a day for slow-release), with water.
Patch: apply one patch to clean, dry skin on the belly, hip or bottom twice a week, changing the spot each time.
Swallow slow-release tablets whole. Do not chew or crush them.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long does Ditropan take to work?: Some people notice a change within a week, but it can take 4 to 12 weeks for the full effect.
What else helps an overactive bladder?: Bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, and cutting down on caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol can all help.
What can help with a dry mouth on Ditropan?: Sip water often, chew sugar-free gum or suck sugar-free sweets. Tell your doctor if it is a big problem, as the dose or medicine can be changed.
