Phenergan contains Promethazine.

Promethazine is an older antihistamine with several uses. It relieves allergies and itching, prevents travel sickness, eases nausea, and helps with short-term sleep problems.

What is it used for?

Allergy symptoms and itching
Nausea, vomiting and travel sickness
Short-term sleep problems
Sedation before or after surgery

How does it work?

Promethazine blocks histamine and some other brain chemicals. This relieves allergies, calms nausea and causes drowsiness.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some people still feel a little sleepy. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and be careful with alcohol.
Do not give it to children under 2 years. It can cause serious breathing problems.
It causes drowsiness that can last into the next day. Do not drive, and avoid alcohol.
Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, epilepsy, asthma, an enlarged prostate or liver problems.
It can make skin more sensitive to sunlight.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Phenergan can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Drowsiness
Dry mouth
Blurred vision

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, or trouble breathing
A fast or uneven heartbeat
Slow or shallow breathing
High fever, stiff muscles and confusion

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

For allergies: 10 mg to 20 mg two or three times a day, or 25 mg at bedtime.
For travel sickness: 25 mg the night before or 1 to 2 hours before travel.
For sleep: 25 mg to 50 mg at bedtime.
Swallow the tablet with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How quickly does Phenergan work?: Most people feel relief within 1 to 3 hours.
Can I take Phenergan every day?: Yes. For hay fever or long-lasting hives, it can be taken every day during the season or for as long as needed.
Can I drink alcohol with Phenergan?: It is best to limit alcohol. Together they can make you more drowsy, even with antihistamines that do not usually cause sleepiness.
