Inderal contains Propranolol.

Propranolol is a beta blocker. Besides lowering blood pressure, it has many uses, such as preventing migraine, calming the physical signs of anxiety (like shaking and a pounding heart) and treating some types of tremor.

What is it used for?

High blood pressure (hypertension)
Angina and some irregular heartbeats
Preventing migraine
Physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heart and shaking
Essential tremor and an overactive thyroid

How does it work?

Propranolol blocks the effect of adrenaline in the heart and other parts of the body. This slows the heart, lowers blood pressure and calms the "fight or flight" feelings of anxiety.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause chest pain, a fast heartbeat or even a heart attack. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly if you need to stop.
Tell your doctor if you have asthma or COPD, a slow heartbeat, heart block, very poor circulation in the hands or feet, or uncontrolled heart failure.
If you have diabetes, it can hide signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat. Check your sugar more often.
Tell your doctor if you take verapamil or diltiazem, as the combination can slow the heart too much.
Tell your surgeon or dentist that you take it before any operation.
Do not take it if you have asthma. It can cause a serious asthma attack.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Inderal can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling tired
Cold hands and feet
Dizziness
Slow heartbeat
Trouble sleeping or vivid dreams

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
A very slow heartbeat, or feeling faint or short of breath
Wheezing or tight chest
Swollen ankles and weight gain with more breathlessness (worsening heart failure)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it at the same time each day, exactly as your doctor tells you.
Swallow the tablet with a glass of water.
A common adult dose is 40 mg to 160 mg a day, split into 2 or 3 doses. Long-acting capsules are taken once a day.
Swallow long-acting capsules whole. Do not crush or chew them.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Do I need to take Inderal for the rest of my life?: Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
Can I drink alcohol with Inderal?: Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
What else can help my blood pressure?: Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
Can I stop Inderal if I feel fine?: No. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous for your heart. Always talk to your doctor, who will lower the dose slowly.
Can Inderal help with exam or public speaking nerves?: Some doctors prescribe a low dose before stressful events to calm shaking and a racing heart. It does not treat the worried thoughts. Only take it if your doctor has prescribed it.
How long does Inderal take to prevent migraines?: It can take 4 to 6 weeks to notice fewer migraines.
