Drug Information
5 reviews for Sotalol (Betapace)
Betapace contains Sotalol.
Sotalol is a medicine used to control irregular heart rhythms. It is a beta blocker that also has extra effects on the heart's electrical system.
Because it can sometimes cause a dangerous heart rhythm, it is usually started in hospital with heart monitoring.
What is it used for?
- Serious irregular heartbeats from the lower heart chambers (ventricular arrhythmias)
- Keeping a normal rhythm in atrial fibrillation or flutter
How does it work?
Sotalol slows the heart rate and lengthens the time the heart muscle takes to recharge between beats. This helps keep the heartbeat regular.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause chest pain, a fast heartbeat or even a heart attack. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly if you need to stop.
- Tell your doctor if you have asthma or COPD, a slow heartbeat, heart block, very poor circulation in the hands or feet, or uncontrolled heart failure.
- If you have diabetes, it can hide signs of low blood sugar, such as a fast heartbeat. Check your sugar more often.
- Tell your doctor if you take verapamil or diltiazem, as the combination can slow the heart too much.
- Tell your surgeon or dentist that you take it before any operation.
- It can cause a dangerous heart rhythm called torsades de pointes. You will need ECG (heart tracing) checks.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, low potassium or magnesium, or take other medicines that affect heart rhythm (some antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics).
- Diarrhoea or vomiting can lower your potassium and raise the risk. Contact your doctor if this happens.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Betapace can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling tired
- Cold hands and feet
- Dizziness
- Slow heartbeat
- Trouble sleeping or vivid dreams
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- A very slow heartbeat, or feeling faint or short of breath
- Wheezing or tight chest
- Swollen ankles and weight gain with more breathlessness (worsening heart failure)
- A fast, pounding or fluttering heartbeat, or fainting
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it twice a day, about 12 hours apart, exactly as your doctor tells you.
- Take it on an empty stomach, 1 to 2 hours before a meal. Do not take it with milk or antacids.
- A common adult dose is 80 mg to 160 mg twice a day.
- Go to all your ECG checks and blood tests.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Betapace for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Betapace?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QCan I stop Betapace if I feel fine?
- A
No. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous for your heart. Always talk to your doctor, who will lower the dose slowly.
