Eldepryl contains Selegiline.

Selegiline is a medicine for Parkinson's disease. It is often used together with levodopa to smooth out the ups and downs in symptoms.

What is it used for?

Parkinson's disease, alone early on or with levodopa

How does it work?

Selegiline blocks an enzyme called MAO-B that breaks down dopamine in the brain. This keeps more dopamine available, which helps movement.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not take it with pethidine, tramadol, methadone, other MAOIs, or dextromethorphan (in some cough medicines).
Taking it with antidepressants can cause serotonin syndrome. Tell your doctor about any antidepressant you take.
At normal doses (10 mg a day or less), special diet rules are usually not needed, but avoid very large amounts of tyramine-rich foods like aged cheese.
Tell your doctor if you have a stomach ulcer, high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems or mental health problems.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Eldepryl can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling sick
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Trouble sleeping
Uncontrolled movements (when taken with levodopa)

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

A sudden severe headache, fast heartbeat, chest pain or stiff neck
Seeing things that are not there or confusion
Fever, shaking, sweating and confusion (serotonin syndrome)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it in the morning, or split into two doses at breakfast and lunch.
Do not take it in the evening, as it can make it hard to sleep.
The usual dose is 10 mg a day (5 mg at breakfast and 5 mg at lunch).
Swallow the tablet with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is late in the day. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Do I need a special diet with Eldepryl?: At the usual dose, strict diet rules are not needed, but avoid eating very large amounts of aged cheese or cured meats.
Why take Eldepryl in the morning?: It has a mild stimulating effect that can make it hard to sleep if taken later.
Can I take cough medicine with Eldepryl?: Avoid cough medicines containing dextromethorphan. Ask your pharmacist for a safe one.
