Vytorin combines two cholesterol medicines in one tablet: simvastatin and ezetimibe. It lowers "bad" LDL cholesterol more than simvastatin alone.

What is it used for?

High cholesterol that needs more than one medicine

How does it work?

Simvastatin lowers the amount of cholesterol made in the liver. Ezetimibe lowers the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food in the gut. Together they bring cholesterol down in two ways.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, drink a lot of alcohol, have an underactive thyroid, or have had muscle problems with a cholesterol medicine.
Do not take it if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding.
Some medicines raise the risk of muscle problems, such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, some HIV and hepatitis C medicines, ciclosporin, gemfibrozil and some antifungals. Check with your pharmacist.
Keep eating a healthy diet low in saturated fat. The medicine works best together with healthy habits.
Do not take it with grapefruit juice, itraconazole, ketoconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin, some HIV medicines or gemfibrozil.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Vytorin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Muscle aches or joint pain
Headache
Constipation, wind or indigestion
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever, feeling unwell or dark urine
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
Signs of an allergic reaction, such as swelling or trouble breathing

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day in the evening.
Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food.
A common dose is 10 mg / 20 mg or 10 mg / 40 mg once a day.
If you also take a bile acid medicine (like colestyramine), take this at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after it.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long do I need to take Vytorin?: Usually for life. It only keeps cholesterol down while you take it.
What if I get muscle aches on Vytorin?: Mild aches are fairly common. If you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, especially with dark urine, contact your doctor straight away.
Can I drink alcohol with Vytorin?: Small amounts are usually fine. Heavy drinking can harm your liver.
