Bactrim is an antibiotic that contains two medicines: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim (together often called co-trimoxazole). The two work as a team against many bacteria.
It is used for urinary, chest, ear and gut infections, and to treat and prevent a type of pneumonia that affects people with weak immune systems.

How does it work?
Bacteria need a vitamin called folic acid to grow. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim block two different steps in how bacteria make folic acid, which stops them growing.
