Hytrin contains Terazosin.

Terazosin is an alpha blocker used to ease urine problems caused by an enlarged prostate, and to lower high blood pressure.

What is it used for?

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as a weak flow or needing to go often

How does it work?

Terazosin relaxes the muscles in the prostate and the neck of the bladder, so urine flows more easily. It also relaxes blood vessels, lowering blood pressure.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
The first dose can make your blood pressure drop quickly and make you faint. Take your first dose at bedtime.
Tell your doctor if you are going to have cataract surgery. This medicine can affect the eye during the operation.
Tell your doctor if you take erection medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil, as they can lower blood pressure further.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Hytrin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Dizziness, especially when standing up
Feeling tired or weak
Headache
Stuffy nose

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day, at bedtime.
The usual starting dose is 1 mg. Your doctor will slowly raise it, often to 2 mg to 10 mg.
If you stop for a few days, ask your doctor before restarting, as you may need to start at 1 mg again.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Do I need to take Hytrin for the rest of my life?: Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
Can I drink alcohol with Hytrin?: Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
What else can help my blood pressure?: Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
Why should I take my first dose of Hytrin at bedtime?: The first dose can make your blood pressure drop quickly. Lying down in bed lowers the chance of falling if you feel dizzy.
