Indomethacin (also called indometacin) is a strong anti-inflammatory painkiller. It is used for arthritis, gout attacks and other painful inflammatory conditions.

What is it used for?

Gout attacks
Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis
Painful shoulder conditions (bursitis, tendinitis)

How does it work?

Indomethacin blocks the enzymes that make pain and swelling chemicals.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not take it if you have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or if you are allergic to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory painkillers (for example, if they made your asthma worse).
Do not take it if you have severe heart failure, severe kidney or liver disease, or in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
Anti-inflammatory painkillers can slightly raise the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long use. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoke.
Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen, naproxen or high-dose aspirin).
Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, steroids, SSRI antidepressants, lithium, methotrexate, water tablets or blood pressure medicines.
Use the lowest dose for the shortest time needed.
Older people are more likely to have stomach bleeding and kidney problems.
It can cause headaches, dizziness and drowsiness more often than other painkillers of its kind. Do not drive if affected.
Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, Parkinson's disease or mental health problems.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Indocin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
Feeling sick
Diarrhoea or constipation
Headache or dizziness
Headache (common)

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Black, tarry stools, or vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds (stomach bleeding)
Chest pain, or sudden weakness, numbness or trouble speaking
Wheezing or trouble breathing
Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a severe rash with blisters
Passing much less urine, or swelling of the legs

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it 2 or 3 times a day, with food or milk.
A common adult dose is 25 mg to 50 mg two or three times a day.
For gout, a higher dose may be used for a few days.
Swallow the capsule with water.

If you miss a dose: If you take it regularly, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Should I take Indocin with food?: Yes. Taking it with or after food helps protect your stomach.
Can I take Indocin with paracetamol (acetaminophen)?: Yes, they can usually be taken together, as they work in different ways. Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers.
Can I drink alcohol with Indocin?: It is best to limit alcohol, as it raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
