Solian contains Amisulpride.

Amisulpride is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat schizophrenia. In low doses it can help with "negative" symptoms such as lack of motivation.

It is used in many countries, but it is not sold in the USA as a tablet.

What is it used for?

How does it work?

Amisulpride blocks dopamine receptors in the brain. At higher doses it reduces hallucinations and delusions. At low doses it may boost dopamine in some areas, helping with low motivation.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Older people with dementia who take antipsychotic medicines have a higher risk of stroke and death. It is not approved for behaviour problems caused by dementia.
It can make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you. Avoid alcohol.
It can raise blood sugar, cholesterol and weight. Your doctor will check your weight, blood sugar and blood fats regularly.
Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, epilepsy, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, glaucoma, trouble passing urine, or a history of blood clots.
Avoid getting too hot or dehydrated, as your body may not cool down as well.
Do not stop taking it suddenly. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, a heart rhythm problem, or a tumour that depends on prolactin.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Solian can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Raised prolactin, which can cause breast swelling, milk production or missed periods
Stiffness, shaking or restlessness
Trouble sleeping or feeling anxious
Weight gain

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

High fever, stiff muscles, sweating, confusion and a fast heartbeat (a rare, serious reaction called neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
Uncontrollable movements of the face, tongue or body
A fast, pounding or uneven heartbeat, or fainting
Signs of high blood sugar: very thirsty, passing lots of urine, feeling very tired
Pain, swelling or redness in one leg, or sudden chest pain and breathlessness (possible blood clot)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once or twice a day, before meals.
For low-dose use, 50 mg to 300 mg once a day. For acute symptoms, 400 mg to 800 mg a day in two doses.
Swallow the tablet with water.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long does Solian take to work?: Some effects, like feeling calmer, may come within days. Full benefits on thoughts and mood can take several weeks.
Can I stop Solian when I feel better?: No. Stopping can make symptoms come back. Always talk to your doctor first.
Will Solian make me put on weight?: Weight gain is possible with many of these medicines. Healthy eating and regular activity help. Your doctor will keep an eye on it.
