Sominex contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that causes drowsiness. It is used as a short-term sleep aid for occasional trouble falling asleep.

What is it used for?

Occasional sleeplessness in adults

How does it work?

Diphenhydramine blocks histamine in the brain. Histamine helps keep you awake, so blocking it makes you feel sleepy.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

It is for short-term use only (up to 7 to 10 nights). See your doctor if you still have trouble sleeping after 2 weeks.
Do not take it if you need to drive, operate machines or be fully alert within 7 to 8 hours.
Do not drink alcohol with it. It can make you much more drowsy.
Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or trouble passing urine, asthma or COPD, liver problems or epilepsy.
Older people are more likely to feel confused, dizzy or fall.
Do not give it to children unless a doctor says so.
Do not take it with other medicines that make you sleepy or with other antihistamines.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Sominex can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling drowsy the next morning
Dry mouth
Dizziness
Blurred vision
Constipation

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

A fast or uneven heartbeat
Being unable to pass urine
Confusion, seeing things that are not there, or a fit (seizure)

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it about 20 to 30 minutes before bedtime.
The usual adult dose is 50 mg (two 25 mg tablets).
Swallow with water.
Do not take it for more than 7 to 10 nights in a row.

If you miss a dose: Only take it when you need it, at bedtime. Do not take it in the middle of the night unless you can sleep for 7 to 8 more hours.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Can I take Sominex every night?: It is only for short-term use. Your body gets used to it and it may stop working. If sleep problems last more than 2 weeks, see your doctor.
Why do I feel groggy in the morning?: The effect can last into the next day. Take it only when you can sleep for 7 to 8 hours, and try a lower dose.
What else can help me sleep?: Going to bed at the same time, avoiding screens and caffeine in the evening, and keeping your bedroom dark and cool can all help.
