5 reviews for Clopidogrel (Plavix)
Plavix contains Clopidogrel.
Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medicine. It makes blood less likely to form clots in arteries, which can cause heart attacks and strokes.
It is often taken after a heart attack, after a stent is placed in a heart artery, or after a stroke. It is sometimes given together with aspirin for a period of time.
What is it used for?
- After a heart attack or unstable angina
- After a coronary stent, usually together with aspirin
- Preventing stroke after an ischaemic stroke or mini-stroke
- Peripheral arterial disease
How does it work?
Platelets are tiny blood cells that stick together to form clots. Clopidogrel blocks a receptor on platelets so they cannot clump together as easily.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Do not stop taking it without talking to your heart doctor, especially if you have a stent. Stopping early can cause a clot in the stent.
- Tell every doctor and dentist you take it before any surgery or dental work.
- Tell your doctor if you have a bleeding problem, a stomach ulcer, or liver problems.
- Omeprazole and esomeprazole can make clopidogrel work less well. Ask your doctor which stomach medicine is best.
- Painkillers like ibuprofen and naproxen raise the risk of bleeding.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Plavix can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Bruising more easily
- Nosebleeds
- Diarrhoea or stomach pain
- Indigestion
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Black, tarry stools, or vomit with blood or that looks like coffee grounds
- Bleeding that will not stop
- A severe headache, sudden weakness, confusion or trouble speaking
- Fever, weakness, pale skin, purple spots on the skin and confusion (a rare blood problem called TTP)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it once a day, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food.
- The usual adult dose is 75 mg once a day. A larger first dose may be given in hospital.
- Keep taking it for as long as your doctor says, often 6 to 12 months after a stent.
If you miss a dose: If you remember within 12 hours, take it. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip it. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QCan I stop Plavix before surgery?
- A
Only if your heart doctor agrees. Stopping can be dangerous, especially soon after a stent.
- QCan I take Plavix with aspirin?
- A
Many people take both for a time after a heart attack or stent, but only as advised by your doctor.
- QWhy did my doctor change my heartburn medicine?
- A
Some heartburn medicines (like omeprazole) reduce how well clopidogrel works. Pantoprazole is often used instead.
